How do you know your pond is leaking?

How do you fix a leaky pond liner?

If you’ve had a leak before, you’ll know this is no simple task.

The standard procedure goes something like this:

First, you have to let the pond drain naturally until it settles below the leak…

If you’re unlucky and the water drops too shallow, you’ll have to relocate all your fish and aquatic plants.

But if you’re fortunate, your pond won’t lose too much water.

Then it involves painstakingly examining your liner to spot the rupture.

You’ve got to look in every crease and fold, and around every inch of every edge until you find it.

I’m sure you can imagine how difficult a tiny hole or tear will be to spot.

It’ll likely take you hours to find it, but once you do – and you’re sure you’ve found it – you can repair it.

Now, I’m guessing you’ve probably already done all this.

And that you might’ve tried some quick-fix pond leak solutions…

Like maybe a sealant or patch repair kit.

And that might’ve even worked.

But if it had, you wouldn’t be here.

So, here’s what you can do to fix the leak and guarantee you never have the problem of a leaking pond again.

You replace the pond liner.

But replacing the entire pond liner – just because of one small leak – isn’t that overkill?

Some people will say so…

Most likely the people who have never experienced a pond leak before.

But think about this…

Sure, patching up your liner might stop the leak.

That same liner might go on to last a few more months, a year, or maybe even years.

It depends how old the liner is.

Of course, I wouldn’t suggest replacing a brand-new liner.

But if your liner’s been in your pond for a while and it’s just sprung a leak now…

Chances are you can expect it to happen again.

Then you also have to consider the material your liner is made from.

Do you have a PVC liner?

If you do, then you might be in trouble.

The majority of pond liner repair products don’t work with PVC.

They cause the patched area to go brittle and they aren’t tear resistant, so if you don’t repair it quickly, the leak will get worse.

Plus, if they’re exposed to sunlight (due to a pond leak, for instance) then they can crack and go brittle.

So, you see in these cases, it’s always best to replace the liner.

How do you reline a pond?

The process to reline is more straightforward than fixing a leak, mostly because you don’t have to find the puncture.

However, there’s considerably more work to do.

• 1. First, you safely remove any fish and plants and transfer them to a filtered holding tank.
• 2. Then the water needs to be pumped out.
• 3. Next, the edging of your pond has to be carefully removed.
• 4. The damaged liner is then taken out.
• 5. Your new underlay and liner are then installed.
• 6. Then the edging is refitted.
• 7. Your pond is refilled with water.
• 8. And finally, the fish are rehoused in their home, good as new.
