Get your garden ready for summer 2021 by building your Swimpond this winter.

Pond Building - The Pond Design Specialists

We have visited hundreds of clients who want ponds installed in their garden. Some want to spend their Saturdays relaxing in the sun with a glass of wine; others want to spend a few hours wildlife hunting with their children; while a few want a social space to enjoy with friends and family. (Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?)

We get great satisfaction from creating something beautiful from nothing. To be able to bring your dream pond to life is even better. Nothing beats that feeling knowing that a customer’s dream of the "perfect" pond has turned into a reality.

Pond building is a specialist area, and we want to create something that is visually stunning, architecturally pleasing and artistically appealing.

Digging the hole and installing the edging is the easy part and the "dig-a-hole-stick-a-liner-in" is a million miles from our approach. There’s so much more to creating a beautiful, low-maintenance pond than that and the passion of our team on-site brings our specialism, professionalism and creativity to your dream pond design.

Koi Ponds

Koi fish is a hugely popular addition to any pond, across the world. We love building koi ponds, and we are a specialist at it! We can cater for any build or design; please give us a call to book an appointment with Michael Wheat himself to discuss you koi pond needs.

What are Koi Fish?

Despite contrary belief, koi originally have a Chinese origin. Koi is a food source before the Japanese bred them for their aesthetic appeal from the mid-1800s.

Koi varieties are distinguished by colouration, patterning, and scale variation.

In Japan, the most popular variety of koi is the Kohaku, a red and white koi. In the United States, the most popular variants are the Kohaku, the Taisho Sanke, and the Showa Sanke. (The Taisho Sanka and the Showa Sanka are both red, white, and black.)

Wildlife Ponds

Any pond is a beautiful addition to any garden, but with a little thought and consideration about the design and construction, your beautiful pond can become a haven for different wildlife and animal life.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, in the last century, 70% of the UK countryside has lost its ponds – which means that the use of a wildlife pond to encourage and nurture wildlife is more important now than ever.

Animal Life and Wildlife Ponds

A pond (and water) is essential to wildlife, and many creatures will make use of your pond:
  • Frogs, toads and newts will even use small bodies of water to breed
  • Caddisflies, damselflies, dragonflies, mayflies, pond skaters, snails and water beetles breed in water
  • Large ponds will support waterfowl, including mallard ducks, moorhens and coots
  • Birds (e.g. swallows and house martins) will pick off insects from above the water surface; they will also use muddy areas for nest building
  • The grey heron can be a regular visitor to even a small pond, feeding on wildlife like fish Even grass snakes may be seen hunting in garden ponds.

Why choose a Natural Swimming Pond?

Natural Swimming Ponds aren’t only stunning to look at, they also bring many benefits to you and your garden.

• They blend seamlessly into your garden, creating a stunning, peaceful space.

• The natural water encourages wildlife to visit your garden.

Don't delay, get started now.

Are there more benefits of a Swimpond?

What really makes a Swimpond the obvious choice over a traditional pool, is that Swimponds are chemical-free and entirely eco-friendly.

In addition, they work in the same way as a pond would in attracting magnificent wildlife to your garden.

Here are just a few things you’d probably see:

• Frogs swimming in the shallows of your swimming pond

• Dragonflies skimming across its surface

• Birds drinking and bathing in the water

The only thing you’d be missing is the fish. But I wouldn’t recommend introducing them to a Swimpond. And there’s a very good reason why…

You see, the water of a swimming pond is crystal clear, clean, and silky-smooth to swim in

This is achieved through an unobtrusive filtration system and natural filtration provided by plants in the shallows of your pond.

But introduce fish to the mix, and they’ll begin to produce waste.

That’ll lead to making your water cloudy and can even make it unsafe to swim in.

However, you can have a separate section of the pond exclusively for fish while you still enjoy the benefits of freshwater swimming.

We’ve had clients ask for this in the past, and we’re always more than happy to design and build it for them.

Every Swimpond we build is unique, keep reading to learn more about our design process.

Still have some questions?

If you do, here are a few that we get asked regularly.

Does it have to have plants in?

Plants don't have to be in the swimming part of the pond, but it is usually placed in the shallower ‘rejuvenation’ zone.

These plants help with the filtration keeping your water clean and clear to swim in.

What maintenance is needed?

Very little. There’s no chlorine and no heating costs. At most, if any leaves fall into the water, they’re best to be picked out, and any plants may need trimming back as they grow.

We also recommend the pumps and filters to be cleaned at least once a year. But if you need help with anything, our team will always be on hand to assist you however they can.

Can it be heated?

There’s no need for expensive heating, although it is an option if you’d like it. In the summer, swimming ponds generally sit between 24-26 degrees.

Under direct sunlight, the shallow areas of a swimming pond get warm quickly which in turn helps warm the rest of the pool.

How much does a swimming pond cost?

The swimming ponds we’ve built have ranged from £25,000 - £350,000, so every project is different.

We can install a swimming pond that’s 20m x 8m from around £80,000. But there are many ways to bring this cost down too.

By explaining what you want to one of our consultants, they’ll be able to give you a rough estimation on the cost. Then, after we survey the site, we can give you an accurate price for your project.

What size and shape does a swimming pond have to be?

It can be whatever you like. If you want a formal rectangular swimming pond, you can. Or it can be as natural looking as a lake you’d find in the countryside.

I still have questions!

If you’d like to know anything else, don’t hesitate to ask. Send our specialist team or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you as best we can.
